What We Collect

Citations and Notes: All citations, bibliographies, and research notes you create.

Where It's Stored: Everything is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB. No data is sent to or stored on our servers.

Retention: Data persists until you clear your browser data or manually delete it within the app.

What We Don't Collect

• ❌ No user accounts or registration
• ❌ No email addresses
• ❌ No passwords
• ❌ No personal identification information
• ❌ No tracking cookies
• ❌ No server-side user data storage

Third-Party Services

AI Features (Optional)

When you use the Smart Source Summarizer feature:

• Provider: OpenAI (via Vercel AI Gateway)
• What's Sent: The text/URL you want summarized
• Processing: Text is processed by OpenAI's API
• Storage: Not stored on OpenAI's servers beyond processing
• User Control: AI features are optional; you can use the app without them

Metadata Lookups (Optional)

When you use auto-fill features:

• CrossRef API: DOI lookups for academic articles
• Open Library API: ISBN lookups for books
• What's Sent: The DOI, ISBN, or URL you want to look up
• Purpose: To auto-fill citation details
• User Control: Manual entry is always available

Analytics

• Ahrefs Web Analytics: Anonymized page view tracking (no cookies, no personal data)
• Purpose: Understand which features are used
• Data Collected: Page URLs, anonymous session IDs

Your Rights

Data Ownership

You own all your citations and notes. They're yours, period.

Data Export

Export your bibliography at any time:

• Formats Available: .txt, .docx, BibTeX, JSON backup
• Location: Downloads directly to your device
• Server Access: None - all processing is client-side

Data Deletion

• Clear All Data: Use the app's data management features in Bibliography Manager
• Browser Clear: Clear your browser data/IndexedDB
• Immediate: Data is deleted instantly from your device

Security

Client-Side Only

Since all data is stored in your browser:

• ✅ We can't access your citations
• ✅ We can't lose your data in a server breach
• ✅ No one else can see your work

Backups

No Selling Data

We don't collect personal data, so we have nothing to sell. Your academic work is private.

Compliance

• GDPR: No personal data collection = no GDPR obligations
• CCPA: No sale of personal information
• COPPA: No data collection from users of any age
