What you need

  • Author (byline)
  • Headline
  • Newspaper or magazine name
  • Full date: day, month, year
  • Page (print) or URL (online)

Use the full date

News articles need the day and month as well as the year in every style, because a daily paper publishes a new issue every day.

No byline

Start with the headline. Don’t use “Staff” or “Anonymous” as the author unless the article is actually signed that way.

Online or print?

If you read it online, give the URL. For print, give the page number (e.g., A1). If the headlines differ, use the one from the version you read.

Questions students ask

Is a news website a newspaper or a web page?
In APA, articles from news sites that are not newspapers (such as BBC News or CNN) are cited as web pages, with the site name not italicised. Articles from newspapers (such as The Guardian) italicise the paper’s name.
Do I include “The” in the newspaper name?
MLA leaves out an opening “The” (New York Times). APA, Chicago and Harvard keep it as printed on the masthead.
How do I cite an op-ed or letter?
Cite it like an article and add a label after the title, such as [Opinion] in APA or “Opinion.” in MLA if the paper labels it that way.
