What you need

  • Author: a person or the organisation
  • Title of the specific page
  • Website name
  • Publication or last-updated date
  • URL
  • Date you accessed it (MLA without a date, Harvard, IEEE)

No author?

Use the organisation as the author when it clearly wrote the page. If there is truly no author, start with the page title. In APA and MLA, don’t repeat the organisation as both author and site name.

No date?

APA uses (n.d.), Harvard uses (no date), MLA leaves the date out and adds an access date. Don’t use a copyright year in the footer as the publication date unless it’s the only date there is.

Whole site versus a page

Cite the specific page you used. If you are only mentioning a website in general, most styles let you name it in the text with the URL and leave it out of the reference list.

Questions students ask

How do I cite a website with no author in APA?
Move the page title to the author position: Title of page. (2024, March 3). Site Name. URL. In text, use a short form of the title in italics: (Title of Page, 2024).
Do I need an access date?
APA only needs one for pages designed to change. MLA 9 adds one when there is no publication date. Harvard (Cite Them Right) and IEEE always include one for online sources.
Should I include https:// in the URL?
Yes in APA, Chicago, Harvard and IEEE. MLA 9 recommends dropping http:// and https:// but keeping DOIs as full links.
